Robinson Crusoe: Chapters Twenty to Twenty-Two
Chapter Twenty: We Make Another Canoe
In chapter twenty of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe...Friday improves on his talking abilities. The two talk about the savages visiting the island and the people they have killed. Crusoe talks about the Spaniards and how they kill people. He goes on to talk about how he wants to lay down a religious foundation for Friday. He talks to him about God and religion. Friday has trouble understanding the devil, however. After a long conversation, Friday becomes a strong Christian. He talks about reading scripture and talking with Friday, while growing in faith himself. Friday wants to go back to his homeland, but doesn't want to leave Crusoe. He suggests that Crusoe come with him, so Crusoe takes Friday out to cut down a large tree and build a canoe for Friday to use on the voyage. They cut it out and make it look nice. The two are happy to see that it floats very well in the water. Crusoe then celebrates the beginning of another year with thankfulness to God. Crusoe goes on digging and planting, despite knowing he would not spend another year on the island. Friday builds a small dock for his boat, and the chapter comes to an end...
I enjoyed reading about how Crusoe teaches Friday about Christianity. I am also excited to read about the upcoming chapters, where Crusoe makes it out of the island and goes onto the ocean.
Chapter Twenty-One: We March Out Against the Cannibals
In chapter twenty-one of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe...Three canoes arrive on the island. This greatly frightens Friday. Crusoe decides they have to fight. After preparing his gun, he discovers that there are twenty-one savages. The two approach the group. They kill all but four, who manage to escape. Crusoe numbers off the dead savages and takes the prisoners to his tent. He makes beds for them to sleep on...
I liked reading about how Crusoe won the fight with the savages. He also saved two prisoners from being killed. I am excited to read about the next chapters.
Chapter Twenty-Two: We Plan a Voyage to the Colonies of America
In chapter twenty-two of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe...Crusoe makes food and dines with the prisoners. He discovers that one is Friday's father and the other is a Spaniard. Friday goes to the battle area to collect the firearms and bury the victims that the savages ate, while Crusoe converses with the two men. He is mainly interested in the Spaniard. Crusoe discovers that he can count, and that they have firearms with no ammo. He realizes that it will be much harder to feed the men because they went from two men to four. They now have no fear of the savages, however, because they have enough men to defend. Crusoe gives each of them a gun and the chapter ends with Crusoe talking about being on the island for twenty-seven years...
I enjoyed reading about this chapter. Crusoe accomplished a lot. He doubled the size of his group. I am excited to read about the big voyage that is coming up.
